Collaborative Learning: An Innovative Educational Approach

As the goal of educators is becoming increasingly focused on preparing students for future success in a vocational goal oriented society, and through an unstructured approach, the success of Collaborative Learning lay grounded on the foundation. Collaborative Learning is a process that can be applied to any academic discipline and used by learners of any age.

Explore the highlights of Collaborative Learning, as presented by this section's authors Will Dressler, Lisa McDown and Cheryl Matthews.

What is Collaborative Learning?

An interactive approach to teamwork that enables the learner to combine their individual skills and resources to generate creative solutions to mutually defined problems.

It is an educational approach that involves a joint effort by learners and/or instructors together. Learners work in groups of two or more, mutually looking to reach the same understanding, solution, meaning or creation of a product. Most collaborations involve learner exploration. Rather than an instructor-centered delivery of information, the learner is expected to apply knowledge as evidence of understanding.

Collaborative Learning differs from Cooperative Learning in that collaborative learning involves learners working together while the instructor does not always have a pre-set notion of the problem or solution learners will be researching. While in cooperative learning each learner is responsbile for a portion of the work while the instructor has a pre-set notion of the problem or solution the learners will be researching.

Collaborative Learning is: Student Centered, Groups of Learners Working Together, a Social Activity, Role of Instructor Switches to "Coach", Increases Responsiblitiy to Learner

Benefits and Challenges of Collaborative Learning

Benefits of Collaborative Learning:

When two necessary key elements (group goals and individual accountability) are used together, the effects of collaborative learning on achievement are consistently positive. It also benefits students through improved relations among different ethnic groups and students with learning disabilities. Other benefits include:

1. Development of higher level thinking skills creates an environment of active, involved, exploratory learning
2. Students explore alternate problem solutions in a safe environment
3. Addresses learning style differences among students
4. Classroom resembles real life social and employment situations

Challenges of Collaborative Learning: There are challenges with the implementation of collaborative learning approaches:

For instructors:

Extensive revision of syllabus to account for increase in group work. Revision of time allocation for assignments. Adaptation to changing role that includes increased student responsibility for own learning.

For learners:

Adjustment to group work format. Time management issues involved with working around group members’ schedules. Increased responsibility for own learning. Classrooms set-up for teacher-centered/lectures. Conversion from competitive to cooperative nature.

One huge obstacle is the way cooperative learning is viewed by administration. The following scenario is all too common:

“Oh, you’re doing groups today. I’ll come back when you’re teaching.”

Developing a Team Charter

A key element of collaborative learning is teamwork. In order to develop an effective team, members must be aligned in defining their purpose, identifying potential obstacles, creating boundaries and consequences. Therefore, the first step facilitators of collaborative learning environments should implement is the team charter.

Though often overlooked, walking through the process of creating guidelines agreed on by each team member eliminates serious issues later. Conflicts are normal in the team environment, therefore addressing potential situations before they arise and having a set plan agreed on by all, help teams to increase productivity.

How can you relate this information about Collaborative Learning to experiences you have had with Collaborative Learning, as an instructor or a learner?

Hi Will, Lisa, and Cheryl,

This takes me back to project-based learning (PBL)!  Everything we learned about PBL ties in with collaborative learning. It is "Student Centered, Groups of Learners Working Together, a Social Activity, Role of Instructor Switches to "Coach", and Increases Responsibility to Learner.” Everything you defined collaborative learning to be. It’s almost like your group’s topic is like an extension of our PBL learning object (or is it the other way around?). Our LO focuses on PBL from a teacher’s view: how to design a PBL unit. Your group’s LO and blog is from the student’s point of view: how to successfully work collaboratively. Very nice :-)

As for how experiences I’ve had, I have incorporated collaborative learning into my classroom when I was a teacher, but that was a decade ago. My most recent experiences, of course, are tied to the OTEC program. In almost all of the ETEC classes I’ve been in, collaborative learning was incorporated. I feel although challenging, it did have a really positive effect on my learning. I feel I understand things more deeply that I would have had I only been required to read and do individual assignments. Also, I can vouch for tools like the team charter. In one class we were required to create something similar at the start of our group project, and it really did make the process much smoother.

Aloha CLer's

I don't know if you changed the description from the LO itself but reading through the blog I had a better understanding of your dirrentiating between Collaborative and coorperative learning.
I noticed you have deli.cio.us listed a one of your tools. I use the site often as I am on multiple computers throughout the day. I find it's a great personal tool and see the benefit in a group situation although I have few opportunities to share my findings with others.

Hi William, Lisa and Cheryl

Thanks for sharing this valuable information. I also conducted a research that focused on teacher-learner interaction in online learning and it will be presented in TCC conference 2009. There are some parts relating and mentioning about collaboration, interaction and teacher’s roles in online learning.

I agree that collaborative learning is student-centered, collaborative learning environment, project-based learning, group project, sense of community, cyberspace learning and so on.

In terms of instructors’ roles: a facilitator, moderator, mentor, guide and a coach who can work as pedagogical, social, managerial and technical support for learning process.

Of course, benefits of collaborative learning:
- Creates interacting and cooperating opportunities among students,
- Fosters positive students attitude toward the educational experience,
- Increases learner engagement
- Promotes student-centered learning,
- Stimulates students to express and share their ideas, thoughts and reflections.
- Creates a sense of online community,
- Improves communication skills
- And other features that students can learn and develop through collaborative learning.

I also have a friend who is conducting his thesis about collaborative learning in learning english as a foreign language. It is good to know tools used for collaborative learning, especially, challenges that teachers and learners encounter. I will share this information with him.

Well-done and again thanks for sharing this information.

Thanks Leanne, Tom and Danh for your responses.

I have to admit, when the team charter was brought up, I had no idea what it was but after all is said and done, it has proven to be beneficial in group/team building. It is an effective and necessary tool that provides the learners with the foundational structure of the group work. And the beauty is that although we provide a sample, the idea can be developed to meet a variety of learning environments (ie staff development workshops); the document can be made as a fillable form allowing team members to contribute to it similarly to a wiki (another CL tool not discussed in our LO).

Nice blog post, collaborative learning is rock! I like all the tools your folks have mentions above, and some of them I am using it extensively. Now, I am looking for more free tools to use, and put in my teaching inventory. If any one knows something new, please feel free to share with me, I'll love to try it.

Aloha CL Team,

I think, in many ways, our lives in ETEC have been one of collaborative learning although I feel fortunate to not have had to resort to developing a formal team charter. Perhaps in the beginning it was that we just did not know enough but were lucky to have classmates on our class projects that were more than willing to add to the team effort and had diverse skill sets. I do agree that there are times when I’m sure others wish they had your team charter template just to keep duties and responsibilities and timelines on task. It is often so important to clearly define what is going on and how it’s going to happen with different personalities and levels of expectation. I appreciated your blog that helped to further define this method of learning and share more tools to facilitate the efforts.

Hi CL Team,

Good job on your blog. Lots of good info! I'll agree with Liz here and say that much of the ETEC experience has utilized collaborative learning. I've had some really good experiences with it and some mediocre experiences. I think that the key with CL is having the assignment instructions very clear. Then the team can move forward from there. Personalities, work ethics and skill levels play a big role. Also, the team charter is an interesting concept - I'm not sure if it's necessary for college students but I could see how useful it would be for younger students or those new to the CL process.

Aloha,
I really enjoyed reading your group approach to what to focus on the topic of collaborative learning.
Collaborative Learning has become almost part of curriculum in the education today. Although it comes in many different formats, the main idea about learning together and importance of building community of learners are essential for today's learning. I especially appreciate your information on how to do this successfully. Team charter makes a lot of sense and such preliminary planning and assessment can really make a difference in successful collaboration in learning. :)

I think that collaborative learning can be a good thing, but can also be a not so good thing as well. I think that at younger ages(elementary & intermediate) it is especially effective, while as students get older not so much. However, that's not to say that I don't think that it works as students get older, it just has to be done effectively.
